Whirlwinds is a traditionally animated short film about an older storm chaser, Birdy, trying to prove the existence of heaven by traveling through to the top of a tornado after being mocked by his trucker friend. Inspired by my own envy of religious fulfillment and wonders about the afterlife, Birdy wants to see what's really up there. The film is primarily ink on glass animation, colored digitally.

Storyboards vs Final Clips

Process
Whirlwinds was created through frame by frame manipulation of acrylic ink on a glass table above a lightbox.

They were photographed as individual animation layers in Dragonframe, before layering and compositing in After Effects. Masking of the overlapping layers was done in AE, with more complex masking colored in Toon Boom Harmony.
